Boys In Poverty-Book discussion
This book, written by Ruby Payne and Paul Slocum, addresses the Achievement Gap of boys in poverty and their increasing drop out rate.
From the Introduction---
Interesting and disturbing facts surround dropouts:
Approx 75% of state inmates did not complete high school
A male high school graduate with a "D" average is 14 times more likely to be incarcerated than a graduate with an "A"
Dropouts cite a lack of connections to meaning or significant relationships
Over the course of a lifetime a high school grad earns $260,00 more than the dropout
Even the Army no longer accepts enlistees with GEDs alone
The attached photo shows all of the Red Flag behaviors that are indicators of students who are at risk for dropouts.
Those are some interesting facts about dropouts! The list of Red Flag behaviors is a useful tool. It is scary to think that I have seen some of these behaviors in my own students. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on the book.
ReplyDeleteThe information you listed makes plenty of sense. I guess it makes it more real when one reads it. The "Red Flag" list makes me think of a student I have in kindergarten. I pray he changes or something helps him change. I guess do something about it instead of talk about it hum? I am going to be looking forward to your post. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteThe 'red flag" list from the book, truly hit home for me, also! There are so many warning signs that we as educators must be aware of and address. I am looking forward to the book's wealth of knowledge. Ruby Payne never fails to provide amazing insights!
